Without departing (much!) from the solemnity of the day, this just in from the Beeb:
Institute of Preventative Medicine in Copenhagen researchers found those with wider hips also appeared to be protected against heart conditions. Women with a hip measurement smaller than 40 inches, or a size 14 would not have this protection, they said. The researchers say hip fat contains a beneficial natural anti-inflammatory.
In the good old days, I think they were referred to as something that would detract from the reverence we're trying to maintain today. All in all, we take comfort in knowing we were right all along. Carry on.

Yeah, but don't get all excited yet. This is merely a newer version of the apple v. the pear body type. People who gain wait around their hips and thighs (pear-shaped) don't set themselves up for the health issues those who gain around their abdomen and upper body (apple-shaped) do because the fat deposited around the hips and thighs doesn't travel, while visceral fat does, and those who deposit fat around the abdominal/upper body area are packing fat around the organs. These people are indeed at serious risk for a variety of cancers and for heart disease.
It's never good to be unhealthy. Latching on to aspects of one study among many in order to justify one's own personal flaws or unhealthy choices is a sure-fire way to end up sick.
