As we consider how we're doing after about one-third of Lent has passed, we can consider the perpetual Lent in some parts of the world. Nicky Yates reports from Sudan:
While waiting for the meeting to begin, I walked around the clinic compound with some of the staff, and saw patients waiting for their consultation. Many were suffering from malaria. One boy had a very high temperature, and was struggling to breathe. As we tried to reduce the boy’s temperature, his mother looked on with concern. In her arms, she held another child, a daughter, whom she had entirely covered up so that no one could see her. I asked the mother if I could see her daughter, and she obliged, removing the covering. There, in her arms, lay Rosio.
Rosio was severely malnourished. She had thrush in her mouth, and would no longer drink breast milk. She wouldn’t even cry. This was the first time I had seen a severely malnourished baby, and it broke my heart.
Thankfully, the Medair staff was able to help the mother, father, and all four of their children -- the whole story is there. It would seem that another severe famine is threatening the horn of Africa as well this year. Hug your children, consider a donation, and pray hard. Some lives seem so bleak. Jesus, mercy!
